Brainstorming session on “Towards Safer Pharmaceuticals to the Nation”
In a proactive move to address one of the most critical aspects of public health, the Health and Nutrition Committee of the Organization of Professional Associations (OPA) successfully convened a high-level brainstorming session titled "Towards Safer Pharmaceuticals to the Nation."
The event, held on the 29th of January at the OPA auditorium, brought together a distinguished panel of leading experts from the pharmaceutical sector to forge a collaborative path forward. The session was expertly moderated by the Chairman of the Health and Nutrition Committee and OPA Vice President, Dr. C. S. Dharmaratne, and was attended by key office bearers of the OPA, including the President and Secretary, as well as dedicated members of the Health and Nutrition Committee, underscoring the association's commitment to this vital national issue.
The brainstorming was initiated in response to growing public concern over the quality, safety, and efficacy of pharmaceuticals available in the market, with the primary objective of identifying current challenges and formulating actionable recommendations. The panel discussion was robust and covered several key areas, beginning with the need to strengthen regulatory oversight. Experts deliberated on streamlining drug approval processes, enhancing post-market surveillance, and ensuring the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) is adequately resourced to enforce standards.
A significant portion of the discussion also focused on ensuring supply chain integrity to combat counterfeit and substandard medicines, where the panel explored implementing track-and-trace technologies and enforcing stricter controls on importation and distribution. Furthermore, the critical importance of a national pharmacovigilance system was emphasized, discussing strategies to encourage the reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) by healthcare professionals and consumers. The session concluded by highlighting the need to empower healthcare professionals and the public through continuous professional development and awareness campaigns.
In his opening remarks, the moderator, Dr. C. S. Dharmaratne, stated that safe pharmaceuticals are a cornerstone of public trust in the healthcare system. He emphasized that the goal was not to assign blame, but to harness collective expertise to build a resilient framework guaranteeing every citizen access to safe, effective, and high-quality medicines. The OPA President, speaking at the event, remarked that the OPA is uniquely positioned to act as a neutral platform for professionals to converge on national challenges. He noted that the insights generated would form the basis of a formal set of recommendations to be presented to the relevant authorities.
The session concluded with a strong consensus, and the Health and Nutrition Committee was tasked with compiling a comprehensive report detailing the discussion points and proposed strategies. This report will be submitted to the OPA's Management Committee for approval before being formally presented to the Ministry of Health and the NMRA for consideration and implementation. The brainstorming session marked a significant step forward in the national dialogue on pharmaceutical safety, reinforcing the OPA's role as a thought leader and a catalyst for positive change in Sri Lanka.
