As we come to the close of another challenging yet defining year, it is important that we pause, reflect, and look ahead with clarity and conviction.
Over the past few years, Sri Lanka has endured an extraordinary sequence of trials. We navigated the unprecedented global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a severe economic crisis that tested the resilience of our institutions, professions, and people. More recently, the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah once again reminded us of the vulnerabilities we face as a nation - and equally, of the strength that emerges when we stand together.
History offers us powerful lessons in resilience. In the aftermath of World War II, Japan lay economically and physically devastated. By 1945, much of its industrial base had been destroyed. Yet, through disciplined reform, professional excellence, innovation, and a collective national mindset, Japan achieved what is now known as the Japanese Economic Miracle. This recovery was driven not merely by policy, but by the unwavering contribution of professionals, institutions, and citizens who believed in rebuilding their nation together.
Sri Lanka today stands at a similar crossroads - not in circumstance, but in opportunity.
As the apex body representing the professional community of our nation, the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA) carries a responsibility that extends beyond our individual disciplines. Professionals are not only experts in their fields; we are custodians of ethics, accountability, innovation, and national confidence. Change must begin within - in how we lead, how we serve, and how we contribute meaningfully to society.
Looking ahead, 2026 must become the turning point for Sri Lanka. A year where optimism replaces uncertainty, where professionalism guides decision-making, and where collective effort lays the foundation for sustainable national progress. As OPA, we are committed to fostering unity among professionals, promoting thought leadership, and actively supporting initiatives that strengthen economic recovery, social cohesion, and institutional trust.
This journey cannot be undertaken alone. It must be built together. It must be driven together. It must be professionalised together.
Let us rise with confidence, act with integrity, and contribute positively to the rebuilding of our nation.
