Diabetes Awareness Programme - (World Diabetes Day)

The Independent Medical Practitioners' Association (IMPA) and the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA), in collaboration with the Primary Care Diabetic Group Sri Lanka (PCDG), successfully conducted a comprehensive Diabetes Awareness Programme on Friday, 14th November 2025, at the OPA premises, in commemoration of World Diabetes Day. The event brought together healthcare professionals, individuals living with diabetes, caregivers, and community members with the shared objective of promoting early detection and improved understanding of diabetes.

The programme aimed to enhance public knowledge about diabetes, its risk factors, and preventive measures. To achieve this, a series of interactive health stations were set up, offering services such as random blood sugar testing, calculation of ideal body weight and body mass index, blood pressure monitoring, foot examination, and basic eye screening. Participants also received personalised guidance and counselling from trained medical personnel on lifestyle modifications, diet planning, and self-care practices essential for the prevention and management of diabetes.

In addition to the screening activities, the event included informative presentations by leading medical experts, held from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. These sessions covered key topics such as early symptoms of diabetes, long-term complications, the importance of regular monitoring, and modern approaches to treatment and prevention. The expert panel also addressed questions from participants, creating an engaging and supportive learning environment..

Family members were actively encouraged to attend, recognising their vital role in supporting individuals at risk of or living with diabetes. The programme was open to the public free of charge, reinforcing the commitment of IMPA, OPA, and PCDG to improving community health and promoting widespread awareness of this growing public health concern.
