I am truly honored & humbled to have been elected uncontested as the general secretary of Professional Association s of Sri Lanka (OPA) for the year 2025/2026. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all past presidents, OPA Forum members, Colleagues and well- wishers who placed their trust and confidence in me. Your support, encouragement and belief in my leadership have been both inspiring and motivating. As I assumed this esteemed responsibility, I remain fully committed to working collaboratively with the newly elected office bearers, The OPA Executive Council, OPA forum members, member associations and all professionals to further strengthen the organization's role as the united voice of Sri Lanka's professional community.
It is with pleasure that I share with you some of the recent events and initiatives that have taken place following the assumption of office by our new office bearers. These efforts continue to further our mission of promoting professional excellence and national service.
October marked a significant milestone for the OPA, with the successful holding of our 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 31st October 2025, where we celebrated the conclusion of our Golden Jubilee year. It was a momentous occasion, where we officially swore in Mr. Jayantha Gallehewa as the new President for the 2025/2026 term. The new President unveiled an ambitious plan for the next chapter of OPA's growth and service to the nation.
The following month witnessed the formal assumption of office by the newly-elected office bearers. The traditional breakfast on 3rd November was a joyous occasion, bringing together OPA members, past presidents, and staff to discuss future initiatives. This event underscored our collective commitment to leadership, learning, and service, as we continue to work together to elevate professional standards across the country.
One of the most heartening moments of this period was the dry ration and essential item donation, valued at over Rs. 1 million, made possible by the generous contributions of our members and member assocations. These items were officially handed over to the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation to assist those affected by the recent floods. The handover ceremony, attended by our key office bearers and dedicated members, was a poignant reminder of the power of unity and compassion. On behalf of the OPA, I extend my sincere appreciation to all members and member associations who contributed to this noble cause. Your generosity has brought hope and relief to many families enduring hardship during this difficult time.
In November, OPA also took significant steps in community health initiatives, with the World Diabetes Day Awareness Programme on 14th November 2025. In partnership with the Independent Medical Practitioners' Association (IMPA) and the Primary Care Diabetic Group Sri Lanka (PCDG), we organized a Diabetes Awareness Programme at the OPA premises. This initiative offered free health check-ups, educational sessions, and expert presentations on diabetes prevention and management, reaching a wide audience and making a meaningful impact on public health.
On 19th November, the OPA hosted an important seminar on the Impact of the Budget on the National Economy - Way Forward. The event featured prominent speakers such as Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Treasury, and Mr. J.P.R. Karunaratne, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The seminar provided valuable insights into the national budget's implications and sparked important discussions on the way forward for Sri Lanka's economy.
As we move forward, it is inspiring to witness the OPA not only thrive in advancing professional standards but also take a leadership role in contributing to the welfare of those in need. I am deeply grateful for your continued support, and I look forward to our shared success in the coming year.
In the wake of Cyclone Ditwah, as the nation strives to recover, the role of the OPA as the Apex body of professional associations has never been more relevant. I encourage all members to join hands with the office bearers and unite in serving the nation during this critical time.
Thank you once again for your unwavering commitment to the OPA's mission and for making a positive impact in the lives of others.
